Navy Boot Camp: Week 2

This week has three inspections and the academic test stated in Week 2. The first two inspections were on the same day and one after the other. They call this the CART PI/DMI Inspection. CART is Phase 1 of Navy boot camp. PI stands for personnel inspection which is an inspection of you while wearing your uniform. DMI stands for dynamic material inspection and is on how well you make your rack (bed) and fold your clothes. The PI is where they have you do a few commands that they will pass down to the Recruit Chief Petty Officer (RPOC). A couple of the commands were: Hand Salute, Attention, Parade Rest

The inspector goes around and checks every single person for uniform infractions. A couple of the infractions or hits, you could take on your uniform are: Gear adrift (loose strings), Dirty/dull boots, Dirty uniform, Bootlaces not tight enough, and Belt not through all of the loops.

The inspector will also ask a question about the 11 general orders, chain of command, or rate and rank recognition. You have to answer it correctly while keeping proper military posture and bearing.

Next is the DMI. Half the recruits will have to make their rack, the other half will have to fold their clothes properly. These have to be done in a certain amount of time and inspected afterwards. But you should have no problem with this because of the countless drills from last week.

Two days later is the zone inspection. This is where Fleet Quality Assurance (FQA) inspects every area of the compartment, including the RDC office. They look for dirt/dust and make sure that everything is where it’s supposed to be.

Next is your first test. You will march to the classroom, and you’re given about an hour to finish it. If your division’s overall score is above a certain score then you’ll receive the Academic Flag. If you fail, you are allowed one more chance to take it later that week. Failing that one will get you set back to Week One and you will be put in another division.

Other things that will happen this week are:

  • 2nd issue of uniforms (if you didn’t receive yours from the 1st issue)
  • Dental work (Many recruits will get their wisdom teeth pulled and will be SIQ (Sick in Quarters) for 2 days.))
  • Training for WTI inspection (Weapons Turnover Inspection) in Week 3
  • Marching practice
  • Physical Training (PT)

Week 2 will be a very stressful week of training, but after you get past it you will be in MCA Phase (Mid-Cycle Assessment) next.
