Navy Boot Camp Recruit Leadership Positions

At Navy boot camp there are several leadership positions your RDCs (military instructors) can give you, like being the RPOC for example. If you are given one of these positions you are called a Recruit Petty Officer. They have authority over other recruits in the division and are assigned specific duties. The usual Recruit Petty Officer positions are:

1. Recruit Chief Petty Officer– The Recruit Chief Petty Officer also called the “RPOC” is the overall recruit in charge of the division. He/She leads the division while marching and calls commands.

2. Master At Arms– Also called the “M.A.” is in charge of keeping discipline and order when the RDCs aren’t around.

3. Port and Starboard Watch– These two recruits are in charge of putting recruits on watch and making sure the deck log is written in correctly.

4. Head Yeomen– This recruit is in charge of making sure recruit records are updated, hands out medical chits, and oversees the other two Yeomen.

5. Medical Yeomen– This Yeoman makes sure that all medical appointments are taken care of.

6. Dental Yeomen– This Yeoman makes sure all dental appointments are taken care of.

7. Section Leaders– These recruits are in charge of making sure recruit racks (beds) are tidy and that clothes are folded and stored away properly.

8. Laundry Petty Officer– Also called “Laundry PO” is in charge of all the laundry getting washed, dried, and returned back to recruits. He/She also has a “Laundry Crew” to help.



9. Education Petty Officer– Also called “EPO” is in charge of leading study sessions with other recruits for tests.

10. Athletic Petty Officer– Also called “APO” is in charge of leading group physical training (PT).

11. Religious Petty Officer– Also called “RPO” is in charge of signing recruits up for religious services and helping out at the chapel.

12. Mail Petty Officer– Also called “Mail PO” is in charge of passing out and sending mail for recruits.

13. Damage Control Petty Officer– Also called “DCPO” is in charge of writing down and reporting damage inside the compartment to the RDCs.

14. Assistant Recruit Chief Petty Officer– Also called “AROC” is the cadence singer while marching.

15. Head Petty Officer– Also called “Head PO” is in charge of keeping the head (bathroom) clean at all times. He/She also has a “Head Crew” to help.

16. Forward Hold Petty Officer– Also called “Forward Hold PO” maintains the gear locker that holds all the cleaning supplies for the division.
